BTC Connects 30 Parks to Free Wi-Fi

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – October 26th, 2022 - BTC has thus far connected 30 parks to Wi-Fi, in partnership with the government’s ParkConnect initiative to provide free connectivity to at least one park in every constituency throughout The Bahamas.
The latest launch of a BTC-connected park was earlier this month in Matthew Town, Inagua, giving residents on that far flung southern island the ability to easily access many services on the World Wide Web, simply by sitting on the park and connecting their devices.
Since the initial launch of Park Connect on August 13th, BTC has partnered with the government and other stakeholders to connect parks on New Providence, Cat Island, Andros, Eleuthera, Exuma, Bimini, Long Island and Inagua. Phase two of BTC-powered Wi-Fi connections began earlier this week, with the connection of an additional 18 parks throughout The Bahamas, all slated for completion before the end of this year.
“Members of our Technology and B2B team have played a major role to ensure that all systems were in place for a smooth launch of these parks in New Providence and the Family Islands,” said Andre Knowles, BTC’s head of B2B. “When BTC was initially approached by the government to begin this initiative, I was indeed excited as I knew that it was an opportunity for us to support the government’s push for digital transformation and the further development of the information and communications technology sector. Knowles says Wi-Fi in the Park will benefit many residents and the move is certainly a game changer for communities.
“As we move into phase two of this project, I’d like to thank the government for choosing BTC as its trusted ally, and we are indeed grateful for the opportunity to be a part of history in the making,” Knowles said. “We are looking forward to future partnerships with the government, with the aim of bridging the digital divide and promoting a culture of technology and innovation throughout the Bahamas.”
ParkConnect is a collaborative effort of the Office of The Prime Minister and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, in partnership with Bahamas Public Parks and Public Beaches, Cable Bahamas, BTC, Bahamas Power and Light and the Grand Bahama Power Company. The initiative was officially launched on Aug. 13th by Prime Minister Philip Davis in his Cat Island constituency. At the time, the prime minister announced that the launch was part of a larger digital transformation strategy for The Bahamas and represented an important step towards closing the digital divide.
